Some
students experience the overwhelming effect of sudden sleep while reading. Some
find it very difficult to read for an extended period of time without losing
focus and interest, while some will read very well but tend to forget all they
have acquired within a short passage of time.
Are you a
victim to any of the above mentioned problems?
If yes, the
good news is that there are solutions to each and every problem mentioned. No
matter how dull or inactive you think your brain is, the fact still remains
that your brain is far more better and higher than any man made computer and
could retain more information than any computer.
Knowing and
applying the right tips while reading will help you to retain and recall the
information you have acquired.
Your brain
is like an athlete. And athlete exercise regularly to improve his skills and
performance. Likewise your brain, the more you exercise it, the more you
improve its ability and capacity. We have short term and long term memory.
Whenever
information is acquired, it can either stay in the short term or long term
memory. This information could easily be lost if no effort is applied to move
it to the long term memory.
Listed below
are various study habits
These are
vital study secrets every student must know if successful acquisition of
knowledge is to be accomplished, they are outlined below.
1. Develop a
good study Habit.
For
information to be retained as a part of long term memory, it must first be
acquired. Most people have a poor reading habit. There is no short cut or magic
involved when it comes to acquiring information except you develop a good
reading habit.
Don’t let
fear of reading for hours discourage you, remember, it is not a matter of how
many hours you covered while reading but how often you read. Consistency is the
key. Some people choose reading as a hobby. They were not born with it, rather
they developed the habit over a period of time, and now instead of seeing it as
burden, to them it is an enjoyable activity. Likewise you can develop such a
habit for reading.
2. Choose
the best time to read.
Everyone has
a particular time frame they tend to read and understand information easily.
Some people tend to understand and retain information easily if they study
early in the morning between 1am – 3am or 4am – 6am, while others choose to
study between 8pm – 10pm in the night.
You do have
your own best time. Scheduled your reading time to match. Utilize any time
frame that work best for you. But remember, you can also read at other times
because the essence of reading is to acquire knowledge and retain information.
3. Make a
Time Scheduled.
Every
individual have to make their own time schedule. You can create a study
schedule table and paste it where it is easily accessible, make sure that you
stick to the scheduled time. The truth remains that you choose to study for
only 2 hours each day.
1 hour for
reading, 30 minutes for meditation and the remaining and the remaining 30
minutes for note making. You can buy an exercise book as your memory lane book.
Whenever you study, write down the important points in your personal exercise
book, this will save you time, stress and energy.
During
examination period, instead of reading your textbook or school notebook over
again, you can easily do revision with the exercise book where all the vital
information is. With fewer points to review and retain, you can easily remember
the information you have acquired in the examination hall.
4. Avoid
Distraction.
Do not let
any activity interfere with study time, and try as much as possible to study in
a quiet environment with nothing to distract your attention like television,
music, or any ongoing activity in the vicinity.
Do not study
when you are tired, weak or when you just returned from school with the fan
turned on, it can easily cause you to sleep off in the middle of your study.
When you are tired, the best thing you need to do is to take a nap or siesta.
When your body is better rested and your mind is sound, you will get the best
out of your study.
5. Avoid the
wrong type of food.
The problem
of finding it difficult to concentrate while reading may be increased by eating
the wrong type of food before reading. If you had just finished doing a hard
work and you want to read, heavy meals like complex carbohydrates should be
avoided because they slow down digestion rate.
The same
advice goes to someone that is probably tired. The reason is that your brain
requires a constant supply of energy to stay alert and focused when you are
reading. If you eat a heavy meal, the attention given to your brain will be
greatly reduced, more energy will be utilized to digest the food you ate and
this will probably cause you to lose concentration or sleep off. Eat light,
easy – to –digest meal when you are good to study except you are fully rested.
6. Eat Food
that Improve your Memory.
There are
natural food that can improve your brain power and help your memory to
assimilate more information while studying. Foods like walnuts, cashew nuts,
oily fishes like salmon and sardines, avocados, tomatoes, olive oil, coconut
oil, asparagus, blueberries, eggs, broccoli, kale, spinach, almonds and pumpkin
seeds.
7. Do not
Hate any Course.
Granted,
because of variation and individual differences, some courses may be very easy
to understand while others may not. A student could easily develop hatred for a
course if the course is difficult and if the course principles have no
application in his activities.
At other
times, the teaching method of the lecturer may even reduce or totally kill your
interest for the course, but the truth is that you don’t have to develop hatred
simply because you don’t like the lecturer or because the course is difficult.
Try all you
can to develop an interest for the course. Remember, if truly you dislike the
course in question, then try all you can to pass that course in examination so
you can avoid a carryover and repeating the same course next year.
