God often permits Evil

Written by: Muoka Chibuzor G

True religion is the life we lead not the creed we profess – Louis Nizer

When we talk about the devil, we often conclude that God hates him with an indescribable passion. It will be interesting if we discover that God doesn’t really hate Satan the way we often think and are made to believe; God only dislikes his sinful ways. The same way God doesn’t hate a man, He only hates his sinful lifestyle. The only reason why God cannot bring back Lucifer into heaven is that His words are his bonds and his lips err not in judgement. Thus, the heavens and earth can pass away but God is not going back on his already established punishment for the devil who is a threat to his authority. The serpent still crawls on its belly, man still toil the soil before he eats, and the woman still cries in labour; why then will Lucifer ever get out of hell (the abyss, of eternal damnation)?

According to Mahātmā Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who was an Indian activist that championed the Indian independence movement against the British rule, he said and I quote “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.” A good conscience, which is the moral compass of a godly man, is very much needed in the world of today that has lost its habitability and has astronomically become hostile.

The best way to approach adverse situations is to adopt adequate opposite reactions. If someone hates you, love the person but do not place your vulnerability at the footstep of the obvious enemy. Why should you love? It’s essential because love often softens stony hearts. Love people, encourage their good deeds but hate and admonish their sinful ways. Showing hatred towards someone who hates you (an eye for an eye) will only escalate a war without end, of which can consume you. If someone hates you, love; if something appears unbreakable, persist; if you experience trials and temptations, resist; every negative action one encounters, needs good opposite reactions.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.” Mathew 5: 38-48.

People often query God. “Where was God when evil befell me? He must be fast asleep.”  The answer is simple; God is still where He was, when Jesus Christ was beaten mercilessly, flogged uncountable, dragged like a log of wood and finally crucified on the cross of Calvary. God purposely allows everything happening around you for a purpose, because He (the watcher of Israel) neither sleeps nor slumbers. God often permits the devil; do as you like He says to Satan, but therein are limits to what you can do, He cautions him. Nothing on earth can exceed the limit that God has placed on it, for the all the powers in the heavens and on earth belongs to Him.

“The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything Job has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.” Job 1:12.

Thus, Boundaries exist! God never hated the devil to the extent of not seeing his face nor not conversing with him. The limitations God placed on the devil are unbreakable! This tells us that God is not biased and He is an incorruptible Judge.

“One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.  The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.” Job 1:6-7.

The devil is always in search of something to destroy, he is a perfect definition of a “destructive workaholic.” But the permissions of God do not exclude restrictions. And when all that Job had was gone, he rose up and tore his robe and shaved his head, fell on the ground and worshipped God and then he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” Job 1:21.

Therefore always understand perfectly that God often permits the devil to behave at will, but with restrictions, God understands that a madman needs chains. The restrictions represent the grace of God in the lives of the people of God. When things go wrong, when worse becomes worst! And the people of God do not sin nor charge God with wrong, the grace of God will be overly sufficient for them. “Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him.” Isaiah 3: 10-11.
