The need for Simple Communication Skills

Written by: Ifeoma Okeke

It is usually said that ‘communication’ is not grammar. A lot of people tend to use high vocabularies during communication or interaction with others and hence, lose the essence of the message.

Therefore, communication terms need to be clearly spelt out for easy understanding for all and for proper usage.
Communication is derived from the latin word “communicare” which means “to share”. It is the act of conveying intended meanings from one entity or group to another through the use of mutually understood signs and semiotic rules.

Communication should be verbal and non-verbal.

Verbal communication is the spoken conveying of a message which could be in English, Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and other forms of human spoken language.

Non-verbal communication describes the process of conveying messages in unspoken ways such as signs, symbols, gong, fire, smoke as used In the olden days or in some present day communities.

In communicating with others, some elements are involved which are; the sender, the receiver, the channel and the feedback.
The sender entails the encoder of the message. What he or she has conceived in the mind, so as to pass across to others.

The receiver is the person(s) who the message is intended for.
The channel refers to the medium or means which the sender intends using to convey the message which could be via television, radio, newspaper or face-to-face.
The feedback refers to the response(s) the receiver conveys to the sender if the message is properly sent.

From the afore-mentioned elements of communication, it can be clearly understood that communication, would be meaningful and useful if the party or parties involved, values the essence of communication.

However, there are basic steps to achieve good communication skills. They include-

a. Use of simple English.

b. Proper timing of the message to be communicated.

c. Passing to the right audience.

d. Proper usage of the signs and symbols.

e. Accurate pronunciation of the word.

In conclusion, good communication skills can be revived and achieved in the society when the necessary steps are undertaken and hence, communication is given its place.
