The 6th edition of the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) annual NYSC Essay Writing Competition/ National Symposium

The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) enjoined Youth Corp members throughout the 36 states of the federation, through the state coordinators to participate in the 6th NYSC annual Essay writing competition/national symposium. This was an opportunity for interested graduates serving their fatherland to analyze and proffer solutions to the socio-economic and political challenges in Nigeria using both Biblical and Intellectual approach.

The 2017 essay competition was the 6th, and the topic was titled –
INCORRUPTIBLE JUDICIARY AS A CATALYST FOR AN EQUITABLE AND PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY
They were asked to write an essay (3000 to 4000 words) on this topic, within the duration of one month. The submission was done through an approved email address. At the end of the deadline (30th June 2017), all the essays were collected, and only six of the essays were chosen based on originality of ideas, and competence in writing. The Essay was expected to attain the quality and standard of being publishable in a journal.

According to available reports and results.

The successful applicants were expected to arrive at Lagos and be hosted at BSN guest house at palm grove estate. The symposium was scheduled to hold on 24th of August, 2017 at Nigerian Institute of International affairs (NIIA), 13-15, Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos state.

The dressing code for the successful six, was the Corp members full kit (cooperate wear).
The chairman of the National symposium was Professor Olumuyiwa Omotola Odusanya (former Provost, Lagos State University College of Medicine).

The result of the essay writing was different, and the result of the national symposium was different. The result of the national symposium supersedes the result of the essay writing result, as it will be used in the final judgement by the judges.

Speaking at this year’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Essay Writing Competition/National Symposium of the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN), where he emerged the overall winner, Damilare said an incorruptible judiciary is the superstructure of an egalitarian societyThe six participants agreed unanimously that an Incorruptible Judiciary is essential for an equitable and progressive society.

Representative of the Lagos State governor, Mrs Olufolayimika Abiose Ayandele, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District 1, said the topic was both apt. She explained that since a catalyst is part of a chemical reaction that is irreversible, the judiciary, in this case, is, therefore, part of the political chemical reaction. She said since participants agreed that Nigeria needs a good judiciary to be progressive and equitable, Nigerians should work towards achieving this.  ‘’It is an incorruptible judiciary that will move Nigeria from where it is to where want it to be,’’ she said.

She said the state government has put in place a reform process in the judiciary, adding that the Akinwunmi Ambode administration is making everything possible to quicken justice dispensation.  She urged Lagosians to support the government in achieving this goal.

Former Provost, Lagos University College of Medicine Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, who chaired the event, asked the Corps members if they still remembered the novel entitled: The Incorruptible Judge. They answered in the affirmative. The eminent medic canvassed the quick resolution of disputes at the courts, enforcement of our laws, promotion of the independence of the judiciary, appropriate training of judicial officers and abhorrence of bribe-taking.

Lagos State NYSC Mobilisation Director Mrs Winifred Sokpena said corruption is not only found in the judiciary but it is everywhere. She blamed some parents for aiding the vice. She said any Corps member who sought preferential treatment in posting was also guilty, urging them to be of good conduct.

The Ebonyi state trio-victory
One of the most remarkable occurrences of the whole event was the emergence of three Ebonyi state corp members as among the six finalists. It was the first of its kind since the inception of the competition.

Iluebbey R. E. (MRS.) State Co-ordinator Ebonyi State, urged the successful three to keep-up the good work and work harder to make more positive impacts in the society. She frowned against the ugly and impious acts engaged in by youths of today. She congratulated the three and gave thanks to God for the success of her formidable corp members.
