Nocturia is the Medical term used to describe
excessive urination during the Night, and it’s different from Enuresis [Bedwetting], where urine is
passed unintentionally during sleep. When you sleep at Night, your body
produces less urine that is more concentrated. This means that most people don’t
need to wake up during the night to urinate and can sleep uninterrupted for six
to eight hours.
There are
various causes of urinary frequency. More often, this is caused by a problem in
the bladder and urethra. The major causes of nocturia can be choice of lifestyle
to medical conditions. Nocturia is commonly found among older adults, but it
can occur at any age.
Below are 6 reasons
why people urinate more frequently at night.
1. Medical Condition
Medical condition can
cause nocturia. This is one of the major common causes of nocturia. It is a
Urinary Tract Infection [UTI] or bladder infection. These infections cause
frequent burning sensations and urgent urination throughout the day and night,
and treatment usually requires antibiotics.
2. Overactive Bladder
Sometimes, when your bladder is overactive, it
tends to make you urinate more than eight times a day due to sudden urge to
urinate even when the bladder is not full.
3. Enlarged Prostate
Enlarged prostate is
usually caused when the prostate is pressing on the urethra, which prevents the
bladder from emptying completely. However, if you urinate frequently during
night time only, then it can be caused by other problems.
4. Diabetes
Having high blood glucose levels
can cause the body to excrete excess glucose via the urine. In this instance,
more sugar appears in the urine and simulates extra volumes of urine to be
produced.
If you regularly have high
blood glucose levels, you may increase the risk of picking up a urinary tract
infection which can also increase the need to urinate through the night.
5. Sign of Heart disease
When you have a heart disease, urinating so
much at night can also be a cause. Frequent urination at night is a sign of
heart disease! Usually at night while you sleep, your brain produces anti-diuretic
hormones to limit the formation of urine by kidneys so you can get a good night
sleep. However, for some people, this is not the case, and the amount of urine
still increases at night.
6. What you drink
It could be. If you drink
too close to bedtime, you may need to get up in the night. Try drinking less
several hours before you go to sleep. Alcohol may help you fall asleep, but
tends to wake you up in the night. So don’t drink in the evening. Limit alcohol
or caffeine later in the day, and make sure you visit the toilet last thing at
night.
