What Cucumber got to do with a Glowing Skin?

Written by: Lar Evelyn Nanji

Cucumber is a fleshy vegetable that belongs to the melon family. It can be grown both in dry and rainy season and it is the fourth most cultivated vegetable in the world.
It has numerous nutritional benefits to human beings.

Cucumber is very notable for its medicinal properties and it is scientifically known as Cucumis sativus. Researchers have found that cucumbers contain Lariciresenol, Pinoresinol and Secoisolariciresinol and these three ‘lignans’ have been said to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Cucumber contains some anti-cancer properties hence, prevents several cancer types including breast, uterine, ovarian and prostate cancers.
Cucumber can be eaten raw or cooked. They share the same hydrogen level with the skin and that is why it is recommended to reduce swelling and puffiness of the eyes due to stress.

It has a cooling effect and cleansing properties. They are helpful in treating many skin problems because of some valuable properties in them which are;

1. Antioxidant: Cucumbers are packed with several compounds that fight inflammation and ageing, including cucurbitacin and cucumerin. The older you get, the fewer your antioxidant level and that is why cucumber is recommended to boost your antioxidant level.

2. Vitamins: Cucumber contains vitamins such as vitamin C for bright and glossy skin, vitamin K which fights dark circles under the eyes. Vitamin B-5 helps in retaining skin moisture. Vitamin A fights dark spots and freckles due to its ability to control the production of melanin.

Due to its high water content and cooling quality, it is appropriate to help soothe mild burns, particularly sunburn. When you have had a long day and just want to relax, just get your cucumber and slice them nicely.

Put them on those tired, swollen dark eyes and just relax for fifteen to twenty minutes. While doing that, you can just chew on some of the cucumbers.
